Last Update: 11/7/2024

Landowner: Jake Tonsfeldt
Indexed by: Richard Williams and Mr. Morgan, Oct 1985; photos by Linda M. Everhart, Jan 13 1996
Directions: Four miles north of Hwy 7 on Hwy O. Cemetery is east of the former Trail Ridge Sporting Clays area and surrounded by strip pits and coal dumps. Private property must be crossed to access.
Condition: The markers were moved sometime in the early 1990s, about 50 yards from the original site; reason unknown. They were originally spread over a larger area and surrounded by remnants of black metal fencing. Now the markers are set in a straight line with a wooden rail fence around them. All are standing, except for William Eli's which is laying flat on the ground and broken in one place. The markers are well preserved for their age and several have decorative relief designs at the top. Aaron Morgan's marker was there in 1985, but could not be located in 1996.
History: The original cemetery location was in the SE quarter of Section 34; the markers are now in the SW quarter of Section 35. The first owner of the property was Jeremiah Ryan, who received it as government bounty for war service. On Sep 1, 1851 it was transferred it to John O. Covington. At the time, Aaron Morgan's land bordered to the South and East. The 1895 plat map shows James W. Page as the owner of this property, with William M. Morgan's land bordering to the East. The Morgan and Covington families were connected by marriage: Mary Alice Covington was the wife of Benjamin G. Brown, a brother to Jonathan W. Brown whose wife was Margaret Morgan, daughter of Aaron Morgan.
